Joseph pulled into Mac and Jessie’s huge circular driveway. This is the kind of house you could buy when you were a lawyer, he assumed. Good for him. At least two stories, brick and formidable, he didn’t know if he liked it or not, not that it mattered, he wasn’t going to live there and they liked it. That was all that mattered. He looked over at his little kitten and smiled. She made him happy like no one had before. He kept pushing her boundaries and every time she rose to more than he expected. She lapped up rules and conditions as if they were fresh milk. Amazing didn’t describe their relationship so far. He had so much more to introduce her to, expose her to, and let her learn. Tonight, however, was all vanilla all the time and they would be a normal couple. As normal as you could be, meeting what passed for her family for the first time. Sure, he knew Hannah and Hunter, they owned the hardware store he worked in. He’d met Bronwyn, who went out with Hunter, in the store, and had seen Mac, Jessie’s husband and Hawk, Hannah’s boyfriend both in the store, so it wasn’t like he was walking into a gathering of strangers. This, however, was his first time out with his little kitten, and he felt proud to show her off. His kitten.

She waited, as per rule one, for him to open the car door for her and smiled up at him, that smile that just changed her face completely making her the most gorgeous woman he’d ever met. Her next rule, he decided suddenly, would be a set of mantras to make her believe that, also. She thought she was just average in all ways and he needed to change that thinking and let her realize how amazing she really was.

She handed him the lasagna and she carried the cheesecake as they walked up to the door where he rang the bell. Immediately Mac answered. “Hello, Tori, Joseph, Come on in.” Mac led the way down a short hall and Sam ran up to her. He was a cute little thing, Joseph thought. Did he want kids? Did Tori? Well, that was getting way ahead of himself. Right now, he just wanted to enjoy her. She took Sam’s hand with the one not holding the cheesecake very naturally. He clearly adored her.

“I can’t wait to see the babies,” Tori was telling Mac.

“Cutest things you’ve ever seen,” he said.

“Oh, I’ve seen a lot of babies,” she laughed at him. Of course she had, she ran a daycare. Something she confided in him that she did not want to keep doing forever. “Will see how yours measure up.”

They walked into a light, airy, almost all white kitchen where two little car seats were settled on a large island. “Sam, are those yours?” Tori was asking him.

“Babies,” he nodded. “They are loud.”

“You’re right, babies are loud,” she agreed and walked over to put the cheesecake in the refrigerator.
